A growing band of professionals leave the big foreign firms to strike out on their own.
Not everyone is banking on big business for sustenance. Jay Desai, a molecular biologist from Purdue, joined Accenture (formerly Andersen Consulting) a decade ago. Five years later, he set up Universal Consulting in Mumbai offering strategy, oprerations, organisational structure and performance-evaluation services. Desai is realistic when he says that it was a conscious decision to focus on small family-owned businesses. "Not only is the desire for them to change much higher, unlike bigger corporations, the owner is directly involved in the change process." he says
